Keratoconus Treatment from Your Houston Ophthalmologists and Optometrists

Keratoconus is a vision disorder that most often appears in people between 10 and 25 years old. This eye condition can cause many visual impairments, including blurry and distorted vision. Here at Museum District Eye Center in Houston, TX, our ophthalmologists and optometrists can diagnose keratoconus with an eye exam and provide treatment for it.

What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus occurs when the cornea thins and begins to bulge into a shape resembling a cone. In normal eyes, collagen fibers help keep the cornea in place and from bulging out. If the fibers become weak, they are unable to keep the cornea in its proper position, thus, bulging out.

The progression varies with each person. Vision changes can slowly occur over several years or develop rapidly. Common symptoms people with keratoconus experience include:

    • Blurred or distorted vision
    • Increase in frequency of corrective eyewear prescriptions
    • Growing light and glare sensitivity, especially at night
    • A sudden clouding or decline in vision

Among individuals who develop this condition, approximately ten percent have a parent with the same diagnosis. Many practitioners believe genetic and environmental influences cause this condition.

Treatment Options

For people suffering from an early stage of keratoconus, eyeglasses or contacts prescribed by our eye doctors are the standard treatment. It is sometimes possible to slow the progression by employing collagen cross-linking. This procedure pairs eye drops containing vitamin B12 with directed ultraviolet light to help the cornea retain a normal shape. Another option is the use of implants called Intacs, which create an improved curve of the cornea. For some individuals, it is advisable to consider a corneal transplant. This surgery can be conducted by our Houston ophthalmologists, and it is the process of removing thick parts of your cornea and replacing it with healthy tissue.
